His parents enriched him with nomaterial wealth, but he owed to them a firm, well-balanced temperament, a thorough education, and, probably to his father,a marvellous to these endow-ments we add a pen-etrating intellect, aninstinctive sense ofright method, ^n ab-sorbing passion forknowledge, an un-flinching though nobleambition, an indom-itable determination,a pure life—-whereinno unruly sensuous-ness seems to haveever beclouded thespirit—and abundantopportunities for men-tal development, wemay be prepared to accept even what looks so muchlike an extravagance on the part of his biographers, that with his sixteenth year, having passed throughthe schools of \ich, he had completed the seminarycourse, including philosophy and elementary next stage of his education was completed atthe Iniversity of Cer\-era, where after se\en yearshe received his licentiate in 1833. He shortly afterwards received the doctoratein pom-pa. In 1834 he went back to his nati\-eplace where he devoted himself with his wontedardour to physics and mathematics, and accepting aposition as professor in the latter branch, variedthe onerous duties of this position by cultivatingthe classics and writing poems. The latter, thoughnot of a very high order of merit, served to extendhis reputation to the capital. He wrote for theMadrileiio Catolico a prize essay on ClericalCelibacy which was so favourably received by thepublic that he was encouraged to send forth
