It is pitiful thatsuch a race should be passing away; butits decadence cannot be arrested, and ina short time the Maories will be as com-pletely extinct as the people of the stoneage, leaving nothing but their manufacturesas memorials of their existence. Such me-morials, therefore, ought to be sedulouslypreserved. Every piece of genuine nativecarving that can be found in New Zealandought to be secured and brought to Eng-land, where it can be preserved for futureages, and, with the isolated sj^ecimens thatare scattered in private houses throughoutthe country, ought to be gathered togetherin some central museum, where they canbe accessible to all who interest them-selves in the grand science of (1.
