In his native land he had learned the trade of a weaver, butafter coming to the United States he applied himself to the trade of astone cutter, in which he became an expert workman. He laid thestone for the old courthouse in Williams County and also constructedthe locks on the canal. He was born a Catholic, but became an activeand earnest member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He alsoaltered his political faith, having first supported the democratic party,but later identifying himself with the republican party. He was active. Weitz spent his boyhood days on his fathers farm inSt. Joseph Township, and received his elemental education in the dis-trict schools and the high school at Butler.
