Prehistoric marine life. Coloured engraving of Mesozoic era (240-65 million years ago) marine animals on a beach. At centre is Ichthyosaurus communis, a dolphin-like reptile. Two plesiosaurs are also seen: Plesiosaurus macrocephalus (lower centre) and Plesiosaurus dolichodeirus (lower right). A flock of pterosaurs (Pterodactyles sp.) is seen in the air at upper left. Two crocodile- like Teleosaurus sp. reptiles are at upper and centre right. At lower left is a Dapedius sp. fish and a cephalopod mollusc. Ammonites (spiral) and crinoids are at lower right. This engraving was by Waterhouse Hawkins, and was published in 1858 in Geology & Mineralogy, by William Buckland.
