Holidaying in Britain c. 1960 – the funfair pleasure beach along The Promenade at New Brighton, Wallasey, Wirral, Merseyside, England, UK. There is a big wheel, a big dipper plus attractions such as ‘The Demon Whirl’ (centre left) and ‘Caterpillar’ (right). Behind The Promenade is the children’s boating pool on the beach. Beyond is The Ferry Pier (with a ferry heading back across The Mersey to Liverpool) and behind it, the adjacent Promenade Pier. This attraction has disappeared and the area been grassed over to become The Tower Ground and both piers demolished.

New Brighton is a seaside resort at the north-eastern tip of the Wirral peninsula. It has sandy beaches which line the Irish Sea and mouth of the Mersey, and the UK's longest promenade. During the latter part of the nineteenth century, New Brighton became a very popular seaside resort serving Liverpool and the Lancashire industrial towns. But after the Second World War the popularity of New Brighton as a seaside resort declined. However, the Tower Ballroom continued as a major venue until it was destroyed by a fire in 1969. Ferries across the Mersey from Liverpool to New Brighton ceased in 1971, after which the Ferry Pier and landing stage were dismantled. By 1977, the adjacent Promenade Pier had suffered the same fate. This image is taken from an old album with its collection of old prints of Liverpool and the surrounding area – a vintage 1950s/60s photograph.
