. London . ow Monkwcll Street, with Barber Surgeons Hall, is a fine large garden. On eitherside of Coleman Street there are very extensive gardens ; thoseon the west belonged to the Augustine Friars, the lastremnant of which, the Drapers Garden, was built over a fewyears ago to the enrichment of the Company and the loss ofthe city. Some part of the gardens of the Holy Trinity 4 LONDON Priory remain. There are gardens and trees and an open-pan- within Aldgate ; and an open court, or scries of courts, where had been the nunnery of St. Helens. Without thewalls, on the east, East Smithfield is a large field, with pathsacross. The sites of New Abbey and the convent of theclan- Sisters are marked by courts and gardens. Housesstand north and south along the Whitechapel Road, but notfar; a single row of houses runs along Hounds ditch fromAldgate to Bishopsgate. Without the latter there is a lineof houses as far as Shorcditch Church, and here the open y^^-T,^ryyqu^^trycy I^T^^y \M» V «*«- ^>- ^----y^. country begins. Finsbury and Moorfields are to a greatextent divided up into gardens, each with its house, reminding one of Stubbcss complaint against the citizenswives and daughters, that they use their husbands gardensoutside the walls for purposes of intrigue. All round thenorth and east of the city the people could step out of thegates into the country. Except the houses of BishopsgateWithout and the Whitechapel Road, there was nothing butfields and open ground. Around St. Giles, Cripplegate, how-ever, we find a suburb already populous. About Smithfield TUDOR 21 5 the houses gather thickly. We observe the familiar names ofLittle Britain, Pye Corner, Cock Lane, and Hoosier Lane. Hol-born, with gardens on the north, has a double line of houses asfar a,s Chancery Lane. Where is now Blackfriars Bridge Roadstood the palace of Bridewell, with its two square courts andits gabled front facing the river. Whitefriars is partly builtupon, but some of the courts and gardens remain.
