Man undergoing heart stress testing on a treadmill. This type of test assesses the state of a patient's cardiovascular health. The electrodes connected to the man's chest provide the electrocardiograph (ECG) display at left. Exercise testing is used in predicting the presence, severity & outcome of ischaemic heart disease (coronary artery disease). In this condition, the reduced blood flow to the heart is most pronounced during exercise, when the heart muscle's demand for oxygen increases. Observations of ECG, blood pressure & pulse may help determine whether a patient is suitable for by-pass surgery.
