Lincoln’s Cathedral - The Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln - is the third largest cathedral in England after St Paul’s and York Minster. The Bishop Remegius de Fécamp, a Benedictine monk, built the cathedral from 1072 to 1092 during the reign of William the Conqueror. The cathedral was largely destroyed by fire and earthquake in the next century. The Bishop St Hugh started the reconstruction of the cathedral in 1192, which was finally completed during the sixteenth century. Lincoln cathedral is a jewel of Gothic and Romanesque architecture as well as a place of many interesting features, such as the magnificent carved wooden screen, the fourteenth century misericords, the Wren Library and the Duncan Grant frescoes. The picture was drawn by Hablot K. Browne (b. 1815), famous during the nineteenth century for being Dickens’ illustrator; from a sketch by R. Garland and engraved by Benjamin Winkles.
