A man walks past a sign saying 'beach closed' at the Surfers has taken an extraordinary step of closing some Gold Coast beaches as a preventive measure against the spread of Coronavirus after thousands of people ignored social distancing rules. Beaches at The Spit, Surfers Paradise and Coolangatta will shut from midnight. The remainder of the city’s beaches will stay open for people to exercise, swim or surf, but Council says it won’t hesitate to close more beaches if people continue to flout the rules.
