The least that can be askedof them is trackage not only sufficient to take care of a fulldays loading and unloading, but adequate to permit theswitching necessary for the different uses of the ears. Any-thing less than this is to transfer to the railroad, in largelyincreased amount, an expense that should be borne by thetrader, and in boom times to subject both parties toserious inconvenience and loss. At the large terminals smallswitching yards for the service of zones or districts are oftenadvantageously used and should be connected with themain terminal yard by running tracks. Next to the terminal yard, there is no better oppor-tunity for saving time than at the loading, unloading, andtransfer points. 32
