Children Robert Downs, of Oxford, son of Leverett and Anna Downs, was born inBethany Mar. 10, 1835, his parents moving to the Red Oak district, on theChestnut Tree Hill road, Oxford, in 1836. He enlisted Aug. 18, 1862, for threeyears, in Co. H. 15th C. and was in the battle of Fredericksburg, the s-iegeof Suffolk, and the battle of Kinston, N. C., Mar. 8, 1865, where he was talenpiisoner and taken to Richmond, but was paroled after three days, and after a. 122 BETHANY furlough was again in the service. At the close of the war he returned to theold homestead in Oxford which he occupied until his death in 1906. He was amember of the Methodist church in Naugatuck and was one of Oxfords mostrespected citizens. THE CARRINGTON FAMILY This has been one of the most respected families of the town of Bethanyand in fact of New Haven County. The Commemorative BiographicalRecord of the county says—Few names in tha history of New Haven havebeen more potent and influential, and refers to the late John B. Carrington,for many years the publisher of the New Haven Journal and Courier, who wasborn in Bethany in 1811. He was the son of Ailing and Nancy (Atwood)Carrington. The family history has been so well written up that only morerecent names and events need be given here. Abram E.
