Nuclear reactor in an icebreaker ship. Overhead view of an engineer monitoring a nuclear reactor in the bowels of an Arctic icebreaker. This reactor fuels the Russian icebreaker Rossiya and is one of two reactors on this ship. The other reactor is the backup energy supply. Icebreakers have reinforced hulls and are used to break through sea ice and open up passageways for other ships. Nuclear-powered icebreakers can only travel in cold waters, in order to cool their reactors. Photographed off Murmansk in the Russian Arctic in 2002.
