NANNIE, the young witch figurehead of the famous Cutty Sark ship, her iconic bust illuminated by the light of a full moon.

Cutty Sark is the term for a short shirt, a loose undergarment once known as a 'shift' - the garment worn by the ship's female figurehead, Nannie (based on a witch character from the poem, Tam O'Shanter). In legend and folklore, the Cutty Sark has a supernatural reputation as a ghost ship, associated with tales of various hauntings and inexplicable occurrences - which merely add to its glamour. Covered up for restoration work since November, 2007, the ship is due to re-open to the public in 2008, after its radical reinvention as a public space is completed. Only then will Nannie will visible again.
