Monumental Lions revealed, Nelson's Column, Trafalgar Square, London 1867


From an original engraving Illustrated London News 1867. The year they were finally installed (The column was installed in 1843). Legend has it that Landseer procured a dead Lion from London Zoo for his preliminary sketches, but took so long that the body decomposed & he had to improvise, hence why the paws on the Lions resemble a Cat's paws rather than those of a Lion
