Kordopulov House and Museum, roof terrace and sundial, Melnik, Bulgaria

Kordopulov's House was built in 1754 and was the home of one of Melnik's foremost wine merchants. It is now one of the country's largest and more famous revival period buildings. The sitting rooms have been restored to their 19th century appearance, with murals, stained glass windows and carved wooden ceilings. The wine cellars are a 180 metre labyrinth hewn out of rock. Melnik is officially the smallest town in Bulgaria, famous for tourism, its wine industry and its "sand pyramids". The "sand pyramids" surround Melnik, and are made from a yellow-white mixture of clay and sand. Centuries of erosion by wind, water and sun have sculptured some amazing natural formations.
