As we observe the industrial and commercialsuccesses of the whole nation, the South does not rejoice more in itsown phenominal prosperity than do the people of the North. It is a false and insincere sentiment that would ask us to forget andentirely forgive the cruel calamities of the war. Brothers cannotforget the death of brothers, nor can mothers forgive the slaughter ofsons. The whole nation will ever mourn the sacrifice of these we Northerners, w^ho have seen Confederate women decoratingthe graves of our Northern dead, as I have done, know that the sym-pathy of mother for mother and widow for widow surmounts humanweakness, and confirms the beauty and stren
