The dry, aridatmosphere of dwelling houses in-duced by artificial heating, moreespecially in winter, is particularlydestructive to the delicate textureand formation of the fairy-Jikefronds of many varieties of ferns. Ferns thrive best in a moist, humid atmosp!iere, and althoughthese conditions cannot be giventhem to the same extent in adwelling house as in a conservatoryor greenhouse, or even where fernsare found growing amidst thfirnatural surroundings, still muchpleasure and satisfaction can be ob-tained by selecting suitable vf rle-ties, and by modifying as much aspossible the unnatural conditiontf.
