Airships past and present, together with chapters on the use of balloons in connection with meteorology, photography and the carrier pigeon . that the shadows in the foreground arewell marked, disappearing somewhat towards the middle and in THE INTEBPBETATION OF PHOTOGBAPHS. 325 the background. The effect is still more marked at great dis-tances. The slope which appears on this photograph is wellmarked, and is emphasised to some extent by the low position ofthe balloon. It looks doubtful at first glance whether the wholetown is on the side of a hill or whether the rise only begins nearthe church in the background. But a very simple sketch showsthat the rise on the side of a hill would be much more marked, and the fact that one house appears to project above its neigh-bour is not enough to prove the ground to be hilly. The roadsare very clearly visible, with their white dust and rows of paths are often very indistinct, and could easily beoverlooked altogether. There is always something charac-teristic about a railway, which catches the eye. But a lightrailway along the side of a road or a tram-line is not easily. Whena road disappears, as in the photograph of Blankenburg, betweenthe points k-k, it is easy to see that it is hidden from sight by aslight hill. It is not so easy to see that the part marked e is aconsiderable rocky eminence, called the Begenstein, so little doesit attract attention on the photograph. But the fact that ithides the road between k and k shows that it is a hill, though itis impossible to say how high it is. The low level of the balloonis also shown by the way in which the peaks in the backgroundstand out against the horizon. The irregularities in the direc-tion of the roads, and in the appearance of the ploughed land, alltend to show that the country is hilly. In the parts round a andb there are many
