His fathersname was William Powell, an Englishman, who for forty yearshad been a trader in the nation, and whose wife was an Indianwoman. In the year 1808, when a feud occurred among- theCreeks, they separated by mutual consent, she preferring to go toFlorida, when a division of the family took place. The fatherretained two daughters; the mother and the boy, then four yearsold, settled in the vicinity of the Okefenoke Swamp.
