The little villageon the crest of the hill in the distance, to the left ofthe church, as shown on the preceding page, is calledthe Colma di S. Giovanni, and is well worth a spring, before the grass is cut, the pastures mustbe even better than when I saw them in August, andthey were then still of almost incredible beauty. I went to S. Giovanni by the directest way—de-scending, that is, to the level of the Stura, crossingit, and then going straight up the mountain. Ireturned by a slight detour so as to take the villageof Fucine, a frazione of Viu a little higher up theriver. I found many picturesque bits ; among themthe one which I here give.
