'Royaume du Siam'. Malaya Sumatra Thailand Indochina. DANGEAU/NOLIN, 1742 map

Artist/engraver/cartographer: Jean Baptiste Nolin. Provenance: The map was extracted from a composite atlas of early 18th century maps, the latest of which was dated c1754. Type: Large antique 18th century atlas map, printed on thick, good quality paper with original outline hand colour/color and decorative elephant title cartouche. The map covers southern Indochina (modern Malaysia, southern Thailand, Cambodia & Cochinchina/Southern Vietnam), Sumatra, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and western Borneo. Marked is the 1685 return route from Brest to Siam travelled by the First Siamese Embassy to France, which had been composed of two Siamese ambassadors and Father Bénigne Vachet, who had left Siam for France in January 1684; it also shows the route travelled by Second Siamese embassy to France in 1686, sent by King Narai and led by ambassador Kosa Pan. The Singapore Strait ("Estrecho de Cingapura") is marked. The island of Singapore itself is named as "Pullo Polla".
