Arjuna and River Nymph

Arjuna is one of the heroes of the Hindu epic titled Mahabharata. A master archer, he was portrayed as undefeatable. According to the tale, celestial nymphs and water nymphs were often sent, albeit unsuccessfully to distract him from his noble goals. In this painting by Warwick Goble (1862-1943), an English illustrator of children's books, Arjuna, on one of his travels, is met by a water nymph. Among those who regarded Arjuna highly, according to the epic and to Hinduism, was Krishna, the most popular of all earthly incarnations of Vishnu, the Hindu god honored as the preserver of the universe.
