Betsiboka River, Madagascar

The spectacular mouth of the Betsiboka River in Madagascar is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 10 crew member on the International Space Station. The distinct red color of the water indicates the enormous amount of silt washed out to sea via the river. The silt is evidence of soil erosion in northwestern Madagascar over the past 50 years due to forest removal for the purpose of cultivation and pastureland.
