Habomai Rocks and Japan from space. Hokkaido, The second largest island in Japan, is the large island at upper centre. The Habomai Rocks are the southernmost part of the Kuril Islands. These are the subject of a territorial dispute between Japan and Russia. In 2005, they are under Russian control, although formally the Habomai islets, as the southernmost part of the Kurils, are part of Japan. Photographed on 14th September 1992 by the crew of space shuttle mission STS-047.
