From potens, powerful; in allusion to the supposed medicinal qualities of some species. Gen. Char. Calyx lO-parted, the 5 outer segments accessory. Petals 5. Stamens numerous. Carpels numerous with lateral styles, seated on a dry permanent, elevated receptacle. (Don's Mill.) Leaves compound, alternate or opposite, stipulate, siib-evergreen; pin- nately cut. Flowers white or yellow. Shrubs low, natives of Europe and America, and of easy culture in a dry soil.
