William Henderson Mayfield, sonof George W. and Polly Cheek May-field, was born in Patton, Mo., Jan-uary 18, 1852. His early scholastictraining was had in the publicschools and at Carleton Instituteand at Fruitland Normal the age of 17 he was teachingschool, and continued his studieswhile so engaged, thus fitting him-self for a professional career by pro-cess of self-education. He began the study of medicineat Sedgwickville, Mo., in 1874, un-der Dr. H. J. Smith. Several yearslater lie took a three-year course inSt. Louis Medical College, graduat-ing in 1883. The bent of StudentMayfields mind was toward surgery,and he fully developed his ambition. MEDICINE AND SURGERY. 301 in that branch under the tutelageof Dr. J. J. McDowell and Dr. JohnT. Hodgen. Thus he began his pro-fessional career admirably equippedfor operative surgery. He began practice at Mayfield,Mov but at the end of a year movedto St. Louis and established him-self there, accepting the Chair ofMateria Medica, Therapeutics andDiseases of Children in the Collegeof Physicians and Surgeons. In 1884 Dr. Mayfield founded theMissouri Baptist Sanitarium, andwas superintendent of that institu-tion from the date of its openinguntil the spring of 1896, when heresigned to build and take the activemanagement of Mayiield Sanita-rium, with which institution he hassince been connected in both profes-sional and business capacities.
