Amasa died in the hospital at Chattanooga, Tenn., June12, 1864, and was buried in the Soldiers National Ceme-tery at that place. Mr. and Mrs. Mann are kind and hospitable, respectedby all who know them, and eminently deserving the briefmention given them in this sketch. They are not membersof any church in the township, Mrs. Mann having neversevered her connection with the society to which she be-longed in the East. They both encourage and favor allsocieties of Christians the lives of whose members complywith their professions. i. JOHN P. SHAFT. The Shaft family are of Gernian and French ex-traction. The maternal grandfather of the subject ofthis sketch was an officer under Napoleon. Nothingis now known regarding his history or the date ofhis emigration to America. The paternal grand-father emigrated from Germany previous to the Revo-lution, and upon the breaking out of the war enlistedand served during its continuance. Soon after peacewas declared he settled in Rensselaer Co., N. Y.,where Peter Shaft, father of John P., was Rensselaer County a portion of the family re-moved to Saratoga County, where the fothcr of onrsubject purchased a farm, and where John P. wasborn Sept. 16,1805. His parents, Peter and Eliza-beth (Loop) Shaft, reared a family of seven ciiiidrcn,and when John was a babe removed to Madison Co.,N. Y., where they resided until 1838, when llieyemigrated to Perry, Shiawtvssee Co., Mich. John remained with his father until he was twen
