This hori-zontal shaft is 154 ins. in diameter. In operating the device the tee to beground is bolted to the upper face of therevolving table G and the dry pipe is sus-pended above it by a chain hoist attached to a jib crane. The work done is rapidand, of course, accurate. for Babbitting Compound Cross-heads At one time the Erie Railroad had anumber of four-cylinder compound loco-motives in use, and a clamp was designed. CLAMP FOR BABBITTING COMPOUNDCROSS HEADS for holding them while the bearings werebeing babbitted. The general design ofthe device is so that it is herepresented as a suggestion for such modi-fications as may be necessary in order toadapt it to other types of crossheads. It consists of two templates (2) madetif plates 1 thick and having the contour(ir outline of a cross section of the guidesof the engine against which the babbittedbearings of the crosshead come in con-tact, and with holes for the 1 clampingbolts which are spaced at the same dis-tance apart as the two piston rods. Inthe forming of the template the dimen-sions that are indicated by the lettersfrom A to L, are varied to suit the dimen-sions of each engine. Tlie clamping bolts are finished and 36ins. long and have the coned plugs (1)sliding over them. The templates arealso finished on the edges representingthe guide outline and on the inner facesthat bear against the crosshead and theconical plugs when babbitting
