Philip pursued, and the Eng-lish army awaited attack at Crecy, where in 1346 wasfought one of the most famous battles of English French king was depending mainly on his«mountedknights, clad in armour, who fought with sword andlance. He had also fifteen thousand Genoese archers, whofought with the crossbow, an awkward weapon, whichhad to be wound up with wheel and ratchet to set thestring every time it was discharged.
