Portencross Castle and cliffs, Scotland

Portencross Castle, on the west coast of Scotland, is constructed from the local sandstone, quarried from the cliffs on which it sits. This type of sandstone is known by geologists as Lower Old Red Sandstone. The white sandstone on the corners was sourced from a local quarry at Kaim Hill. A wave-cut platform is visible below the cliffs.
