The business of the central stockyards is subject to closeregulation by the Dominion Government with respect to equipment,officers, scales, water, etc., with respect to the handling of stock,and also with respect to correctness of returns for stock sold bymembers of a commission firm or live stock exchange. The Dominion Government is fostering the saving of femalecattle stock by providing, in conjunction with the railway companies. for free transportation of females under two years bought at thestockyards by bona fide farmers. Railway transportation, andother expenses also, are paid to purchasers of such stock. The sameairangement applies to ewe stock under four years old. Shipmentsmust consist of forty ewes or twenty cattle. Under this regulationsome thousands of cattle have gone to the Peace River countryfiom the Edmonton Beef Sires Produce.—Butter-marketing receives direct government Provincial Dairy Commissioner is equipped to make advanceson consignments of butter to the cold storage warehouse of theDepartment of Agriculture at Calgar>^ and holds or releases theproduct to suit the conditions of the market. All butter is gradedand the grades, which are fixed by The Dairymens Act, are es-tablished with the trade at both outside and local centres. TheCommissioner will give grading at both Calgary and Edmontonto all samples of butter submitted. 90 The Department of Agriculture also conducts an egg andpoultry- marketing service. This service may be taken advantageof by individual farmers, or other producers, or by groups of farmersor associations. Eggs are graded and sold, and returns made toshippers—advances being made at the time
