It adheres to the popliteal vein, which is situated behind, and to its outer side ; it sends off the followingbranches. 2. The articularis superior externa arises nearly opposite the internalsuperior branch, runs outwards under the tendon of the biceps, to bedistributed upon the vastus externus, and outer and upper part of theknee. 2. The articularis inferior externa passes off opposite the internal infe-rior artery, and runs downwards and outwards, between the externallateral and capsular ligaments. 3. The articularis superior interna passes round the inner condyle ofthe femur, runs under the semimembranosus and semitendinosus, perforates the tendon of the triceps, to be dispersed upon the upper. 36 the dissectors guide. part of the knee, anastomosing with the ramus anastomodicus mag- nus. i,j- c 3. The articularis inferior interna arises opposite the bending ot thejoint, runs downwards and inwards round the head of the tibia, sendingbranches to the adjacent parts of the joint; some of these passing by thesemilunar cartilages into the inner part of the joint. 4. The articularis media vcl azygos is irregular in its origin, runs be-tween the condyles, and is distributed upon the fat, ligaments, andbones, at the posterior part of the joint. 5. The arteriae surales descend to supply the gastrocnemius, soleus, and other muscles at the back of the leg. The popliteal artery, having gained the inferior border of the popli-teus muscle, divides into two branches, the anterior and posterior tibialarteries ; the former has alr
