The Lindwurm Fountain, Klagenfurt, Austria, c1935. Sculpture of a dragon in the town of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee in the state of Carinthia. The skull of an Ice Age woolly rhinoceros was found in a nearby quarry in the 14th century, and was mistaken for that of a dragon. A myth grew up in which a hero slayed a dragon, and the statue was built in the 16th century to comemmorate the story. The fountain and sculpture of Hercules were added later. From "Österreich - Land Und Volk", (Austria, Land and People). [R. Lechner (Wilhelm Müller), Vienna, c1935]
