A late 19th century view of the main gatehouse to Lancaster Castle built at the start of the 15th century, instigated by King Henry IV, although legend attributes the work to John of Gaunt. A medieval castle in Lancaster in the English county of Lancashire it saw action in 1322 and 1389 when the Scots invaded England, progressing as far as Lancaster and damaging the castle. In the English Civil War, the castle was used as a prison.
