Face of exhaustion and despair. Medieval stone caryatid helping to hold up a weighty Romanesque tympanum in a French church. Over the west portal of the Église Sainte-Marie, in Oloron-Sainte-Marie, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France. This caryatid is one of a pair - shackled prisoners, chained together at the waist.

Oloron-Sainte-Marie, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France: the strain and pain of spending centuries helping to hold up the weighty Romanesque tympanum over the west portal of Oloron’s former cathedral, now the Église Sainte-Marie (Church of St. Mary), is all too obvious on the weathered face of this prisoner. The captive is one of two superbly carved medieval caryatids, shackled together at the waist, that support the central pillar and two arches above. They survived a devastating fire in the late 11th century.
