No completeexplanation of this advance of the iris has yet beengiven. Dr Adolf Weber holds that the ciliary pro-cesses becoming swollen from various causes, pushthe iris forwards and so start the glaucomatousstate. Priestly Smith believes the primary obstruc-tion to depend upon narrowing, or even obliteration,of the circular chink ( circumlental space) betweenthe edge of the lens and the tips of the ciliary pro-cesses, and that this proceeds mainly from a pro-gressive increase in the size of the lens which occurs 246 GLAUCOMA in old age ;* obstruction of this space leads to rise ofpressure in the vitreous, followed by advance of the lens.
