Muslim castle of Calatrava la Vieja and Guadiana river. Fortress Umayyad City (VIII century). From the twelfth century, to form part of Castila, it belonged to the Order of the Temple. During the High Middle Ages, was the only major city in al-Andalus in the valley of the Guadiana river. His prominent position, on the left side of the river, made the city obliged crossing place on the road from Cordoba to Toledo and communications between the Levant and the west.
