The town is situated on a N. bay of the Gulf ofTaranto, on a rock which separates the latter from the deep inletof the Mare Piccolo. The bay is bounded on the by the CapoSan Vito, and on the W. it is [protected by two flat islands, theChoerades of antiquity, now called San Pietro and San Paolo; thelatter and smaller is occupied by a lighthouse and by the ruins ofa fort built by the French.
