Margaretenhöhe, Essen, NRW, Germany. House entrance, Metzendorf Strasse.

Margaretenhoehe is the most attractive of the Ruhr industrial housing estates. It was instigated by Alfred Krupp's widow in 1907 being influenced by a recent visit to England. It was built by architect Georg Metzendorf in 1910 and provided housing for 16,000, workers, employees and civil servants. Due to the vicinity of the Krupp factories, 44% of the housing was severely damaged by allied bombing in 1944. Rebuilding work was completed 10 years later.
