Proteomics research. Researcher staining a 2-D polyacrylamide gel used in PAGE with Coomassie blue dye. PAGE (polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) is used to study the structure and function of an organism's proteins (proteomics). An electric field and a pH gradient are set up at right angles to each other in the gel, separating proteins by their mass and charge respectively. The use of Coomassie blue dye enables the separations to be examined with the naked eye but the disadvantage is that in binding to proteins it causes complexes to dissociate.
