On the 7th of December, 1849, the machine-shop, with all its contents, wasdestroyed by fire, and the loss was estimated at twelve thousand dollars. BeingAvithout insurance, the accumulations often years were thus swept away. Thedebts, however, were all paid, and the next year the shop was rebuilt and againput in active oi^eration. In 1858, he organized a stock company under the name of the Putnam MachineComi)any, of which he was chosen president and general niannger.
