On the toj) at V is a sight- by means of which I lie caniora may be directed at tiie ilesired oljject. Within tiie bo.\ at the back is a magazine plate holder for six plates. 'I'liis is rejjresentcd at tlie left at (" IF in (ignrc !>. it is so arranged that when a plate has been exposed it maj^ be nindc lo fall forwnrd by turning tiie handle shown at M in tlic central figure. A st'cond plate is al the same time pushed into place by springs. When this has been ex|)osed a second turn of the handle allows the plate to fall and a third plate comes into place. Six plates may thus be exposed witliout ojx'niiig the i)ox. On eacli side of I he pliile holder are two cleats (f/l). These glide upon two inils on the inside of the box, one on eithei' side, so tlial the plate holder nia\ lie moved back and lorlh on the rails away finm the lens or toward it. By means of a set screw the plate holder may be firmly clamped at any point on the rail. The camera is focused by means of tiiis nioveinenl of the plate holder. To prevent reflection of light from the lower side of the surface film of the water into the camera there is pro- vided a semicylindrical shade shown at A B on the right in figures. It may be attached the above tlie lens by the arrangement shown at X. It is not possible to focus after the has been closed in order to immerse it. Conseciuently one of the rails upon which the plate holder moves must be provided with a scale. The divisions on tliis .scale corresj)ond to dill'erenl dista
