This left the mother with a large fam-ily of children, and her only son not yet three years ofage. Mr. Haudenshield had a beautiful farm of twohundred acres, upon which there was an indebtednessof $27,000, and the widow was advised to sell the prop-erty, but being a woman of indomitable courage, shedecided to hold the farm and pay off the the aid of her children, who all worked on thefarm early and late, she paid off the entire years before her death she divided the farm amongher children, removed to Allegheny City, and lived aretired life of well-earned ease, passing away Aug. 21, 1899- Charles Frederick Haudenshield, son of Jacob andLouisa (Gass) Haudenshield, was born in Union town-ship, Allegheny county, April 5, 1874, being the only son. BIOGRAPHICAL 75 in the large family above noted. He was educated inthe public schools of Green Tree township and Curry-College of Pittsburgh, during vacations, from earliestchildhood helping his mother in the work of the farm,as he was left fatherless when a little child. When aboutseventeen years of age he purchased a stall in the Pitts-burgh market, and for about two years sold then formed a partnership with his brother-in-law,under the lirm name of G. B. Robinson & Company,handling every kind of farm products, a considerablepart of the merchandise being produced on the Hauden-shield farm. In 1905 Mr. Robinson withdrew from thepartnership, Mr. Haudenshield continuing the businessalone for a time, but six months later Mr. Robinsonagain became a member of the firm, and so continueduntil May I, 1921, when Mr. Haudenshield became soleowner of the business.
