ALICE detector. Engineer inspecting part of the ALICE (a large ion collider experiment) detector at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. The detector will be placed around the large hadron collider (LHC), CERN's highest energy particle accelerator. ALICE will study heavy ion (lead) collisions at very high energies, hopefully generating quark- gluon plasma, a primordial state of matter thought to have been present in the Universe microseconds after the Big Bang. The detector will detect and analyse the particles produced, and record events as the matter expands and then cools down again. A pilot run of the LHC is scheduled for summer 2007.
