The estuary of the Emscher into the Rhine was moved from Dinslaken, just under 500 meters north to Voerde. Fish can now swim up the new Emscher from the Rhine without barriers through a newly created floodplain. Since the construction of a parallel sewer in January 2022, the Emscher is completely free of sewage. The river was previously an open, above-ground combined sewer carrying both rainwater and sewage.
