Debris and artifacts wash up on the beach of Barren Island in Dead Horse Bay in the Gateway National Recreation Area in Brooklyn in New York on Sunday, January 31, 2010. During the 19th century the area was home to horse rendering plants which gave way to fish oil factories and eventually the area was connected to Brooklyn via garbage and sand as landfill in the 1920's becoming part of Barren island Airport, renamed Floyd Bennett Field. The cap on the landfill eventually broke in the 1950's and artifacts from the 1920's and earlier have been washing up. (© Richard B. Levine)
