A deadly shower of stones, comet, and discovery of Einsisheim meteorite (Alsace) 1492. Woodcut with early handcolouring from a page of Conrad Lycosthenes' (Chronicle of Prodigies and Omens) - \Prodigiorum ac Ostentorum Chronicon\" Published Hendricus Petri, Basel, 1557. This image appears to show a shower of meteorites - Lycosthenes notes they are stones and not hail. There are no modern reports of human casualties due to meteorites. The comet is represented as a burning torch. And the lower picture shows the discovery of the Ensisheim meteorite on the 7th November 1492. A loud explosion was heard and a boy took townsfolk to a deep hole in a field where the 280 pound meteorite was discovered and retrieved. What remains of this earliest recorded fall is still on display in Einsisheim today."
