One result isthat there is much less difference between the various classes of societythan in an old country. The working man, while respectful to hisemployer, is more independent than his brother in England because hefeels surer of a livelihood. It is our wish in this and the followingchapters to tell something of the occupations of the people in Canada. An English boy would naturally put manufactures first, but in Canadathese do not occupy so important a place as in England. Yet they are CANADA. 29 quite worth considering, for there are many great manufacturing firmsin the Dominion, and the number is rapidly increasing. There are adozen large factories making agricultural machinery of all sorts —binders, mowers, rakes, threshing machines and ploughs. The value ofthe annual exports of agricultural implements to Australia aloneamounts to over half a million dollars, or one hundred thousand poundssterling.
