Springfieldhas even yet some share in the Chicopee river, which touchesits northeastern border, and to it Indian Orchard owes itsimportance. There are a number of natural ponds, mostly fed by unseensprings. They either have an outlet under ground, or else thewater flowing in is so nicely balanced by the water passinginto the air by evaporation that they need no outlet. Wherethis balance is destroyed by the lessening of the supply ofwater, as by the cutting of trees, the pond diminishes in sizeand incidentally peat is formed. An example may be seen HISTORY OF SPRINGFIELD. on the Wilbraham road beyond the North Branch. Goosepond, at first called Swan pond, because of the swans thatstopped there on their spring and autumn journeys, was thevery largest pond, and stretched northward from Winchestersquare. It was built over not many years ago. Two Mile pond seems likely-?•.•?? to meet the same fate. Five Mile~ pond, named from--its distance from Main street, is|4i^ divided by the rail-road. Island pond,so called from itssingle island, afloating bog, is nearer, but little known. Loon pond is a prettysheet of water and Venturers pond is a pleasing feature ofSixteen Acres. The Sixteen Acres mill pond is perhaps anatural pond caused by a rock dam. In all there are tennatural ponds. The map accompanying this chapter showsthe natural features and localities as they were in the days ofthe original settlers of Spr
