Antarctic exploration, 1912-16. Polar projection with three Antarctic exploration routes. British explorer Robert Falcon Scott (red route) travelled across the Ross Ice Shelf, reaching the South Pole on 17 January 1912. However, a team led by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen (green route) had arrived there a month earlier. Scott and his party died on the return journey. Amundsen's group returned safely. Two years later, British explorer Ernest Shackleton commanded Endurance (purple route). Trapped in pack ice in the Weddell Sea, the ship sunk in October 1915. The crew, via Elephant Island and South Georgia, were rescued by 1916.
